J P Michaels, hales from Connecticut and is a versatile professional musician that primarily focuses on Bass guitar and Lead Vocals. He has written music for bands, movies, adult entertainment, television shows, video games, and TV and radio commercials. He now resides in Las Vegas, Nevada where he performs with various bands and continues to be in demand for live music and session work. His love for music started at an early age. From kindergarten to 2nd grade, he took singing lessons. In 3rd grade, J P had a choice to learn many band instruments under the direction of Mr. Lipski and he chose the drums as his first instrument and took lessons for 3 years. After seeing one of his friends playing guitar, J P soon saw his first real creative and portable instrument. He soon took classical guitar lessons from Teresa Fernandez. It took only 7 months to surpass her ability, so J P resumed lessons with Teresa's teacher Gavin Michaels. (The inspiration for his stage name J P Michaels) Two years later, the lessons stopped from Gavin, and he continued to use his ear as well as sheet music to learn songs. The classical lessons still shine through in his playing when he displays his finger picking techniques and his acoustic guitar prowess. Meanwhile, J P was singing and playing acoustic guitar to large crowds at Lake Compounce Amusement Park in Bristol Connecticut every Sunday with Slim Cox and the Cowboy Caravan, a country western house band. They would play a set of country and blue grass covers, and then back up stars like Dolly Parton, Crystal Gale, Little Jimmy Dickens, Buck Owens, and many more that came to town. J P purchased his first keyboard, a Korg Poly-Six synthesizer and soon found himself taking on that role in bands. He quickly added another keyboard to his set up, beginning his love affair with synthesis, sound and music technology. Finding a competent bassist was difficult so J P opted to pursue bass guitar and began his love affair with “the bottom end”. J P spent the following years in and out of various bands, in varying capacities, such as keyboard player, bassist, vocalist, back-up vocalist, and guitar player. Often times, he combined two things at once. J P has achieved success in different degrees including into a 5 year project that was eventually signed to CBS records and another to Road Racer Records. He also contributed heavily in writing original music, producing, and recording the bands he was involved with. Proving he was serious as a composer, J P completing his Bachelor of Arts in Music at Hartt School of Music, in Hartford Ct, after attending two years prior at the University Of Connecticut for music theory. He was also successful in designing and installing recording equipment in local recording studios, learning and developing recording and production techniques along the way. Over the years J P has opened up for many top acts including Giuffria, Joan Jett, Tom Petty, Sweet, The Pretenders, Till Tuesday, and Foghat. He has also performed for many organizations including CHOC (Children’s Hospital of Orange County) and RAD (Rock Against Drugs). Residing in Las Vegas provides J P with a great working environment where he continues to perform with various bands for live music and session work. |
